Addis Ababa, November 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has emphasized that the ongoing military operation in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia plans to end impunity, as he emphasized that “no federation and constitutional order can tolerate such illegality.”
“I call on the international community to understand the context and the constant transgressions of the clique of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) that have led the federal government to undertake this law enforcement operation that aims to put an end once and for all to impunity and forces aimed at destabilizing the country and the region, “the Ethiopian prime minister said in a statement issued on Sunday, the Xinhua news agency reported Monday.
Since early Wednesday morning, the Ethiopian government had been conducting military operations against the TPLF, the ruling party in Ethiopia’s northernmost Tigray region and now in an official war against the federal government that followed the TPLF’s reported attack on the northern command of the Ethiopian Defense Force, a division that has been stationed in the region for more than two decades.
Noting that the Ethiopian people “have paid a huge price so far for the criminality of the belligerent cliques,” Ahmed emphasized that “now we all deserve peace and stability. And this operation aims to end the impunity that has prevailed for years.” .
Ahmed also noted that behind the conflicts that have resulted in the suffering and death of many Ethiopians in the past two years, close observers of Ethiopian politics could clearly see the influence of the TPLF clique.
“They sponsored, trained and equipped any force that was willing to engage in violent and illegal acts to derail the transition,” Ahmed said, adding that their goal “was clearly to make the country ungovernable by instigating fighting along ethnic lines and religious, to sow division and discord so that the democratic transition loses its momentum “.
“In an effort to bring these conflict entrepreneurs to justice, arrest warrants from federal courts were ignored in open disregard for the rule of law,” the Ethiopian prime minister said.
He also emphasized that fugitives from the law assumed official party and state government positions within the regional state of Tigray and serial obstruction of justice became the hallmark of the TPLF.
The sudden attack on the army base by the TPLF fighters and the subsequent military operation by the federal government came against the background of mounting tensions between Ahmed’s Prosperity Party and the TPLF, with each side blaming the other of trying to destabilize the country.
The Ethiopian government has been blaming the TPLF, which was one of the four fronts of the coalition of Ethiopia’s former ruling party, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), for planning various acts of treason in different parts of the country with the general objective of destabilizing the country. East African country.
Three of the four former members of the EPRDF coalition had joined other regional parties last year to establish the Party of Prosperity, as the TPLF refused to join.
According to Ahmed, for more than two years, the federal government opted for the utmost restraint, even though it was being criticized by citizens, including the federal parliament, for failing to take further action to arrest fugitives from the law who were released in the Tigray. region.
“Unfortunately, the responsible and moderate approach of the federal government was perceived as a weakness by the fugitives and their clique,” he said.
The growing differences between the federal government and the TPLF were exacerbated in September this year, when the Tigray regional government decided to continue with the planned regional elections, which the Ethiopian parliament had previously postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
