Like the PS5, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X has been the subject of various memes in recent months, most notably with many users comparing its box-shaped design to a refrigerator. Now that the console is finally in the hands of gamers, a new joke has emerged online, and Microsoft itself has been forced to intervene.
Viral videos have been circulating, pretending to show smoke billowing from the top of the console. It seems like the Xbox Series X has overheated, and it’s certainly not a good look for any gaming console, especially so soon after launch (this is where you can get an Xbox Series X if you’re watching).

While it seems like a pretty shocking thing, an unofficial Xbox account tweeted (below) revealing how the effect is created by introducing vape smoke into the console. Thanks to the power of that remarkably large fan at the top of the device, the smoke pours upward to create the illusion.

We don’t recommend, you know, filling your new console with smoke (probably not covered under warranty), but we can’t help but admire the creativity of the videos either. It is an incredibly realistic effect, created without the aid of any VFX software. What forced the first prankster to blow smoke into his Xbox, we can only guess. (Perhaps it also involved smoke).
And now Microsoft itself has gotten involved, giving a “can’t believe” answer it has to say. Yes, the company has officially asked gamers not to blow vape smoke on their Xbox Series X.
