Microsoft says it has no intention of preventing Bethesda Softworks from releasing games on Sony and Nintendo systems in the future.
Chief Financial Officer Tim Stuart spoke about the tech giant’s plans for Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media at the recent Jefferies Interactive Entertainment conference, and how it will handle future game releases. He noted that Microsoft does not intend to prevent the developer from releasing titles on rival consoles, however Xbox systems will likely receive preferential treatment.
“What we will do in the long term is that we do not intend to just get all Bethesda content from Sony or Nintendo or otherwise,” Stuart said, as transcribed by Looking for Alpha. “But what we want is that the content, in the long term, be the first or the best or the best or choose your differentiated experience, on our platforms. We want Bethesda content to display better on our platforms. “
Stuart added that the acquisition of Bethesda and its sister studios “is not about being exclusive” but about supporting their Xbox Game Pass service. “But if you think of something like Game Pass, if it shows up better on Game Pass, that’s what we want to see, and we want to boost our Game Pass subscriber base through that Bethesda channel,” he added.
In September, when Microsoft first announced its plans to buy ZeniMax media, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said future Bethesda games will be released on rival consoles “on a case-by-case” basis.
During his appearance at the Jefferies Interactive Entertainment conference, Stuart also said that Microsoft will reveal pricing for its next-gen first-generation games “in due course.” He also claimed that the supply of Xbox Series X consoles | S would be limited to at least April 2021.
