Microsoft Releases Solution for chkdsk BSOD and Disk Corruption Problem – Software – News

A nasty little bug managed to get into the series of fixes provided by Microsoft in some recent Patch Tuesday downloads. The error was quite serious as it could mean that users experienced BSOD and disk corruption issues and the devices could no longer boot. Microsoft has recognized the problem and has now started to implement fixes, as well as explain mitigation steps to those who have already messed up with the bug.

Microsoft Windows 10 versions 2004 and 2H2 received updates KB4592438 and KB4586853 in recent weeks and it is within these updates that the bug was brought to the spotlight. How was the error manifested to users? Bleeping Computer says that after users of the affected systems used the chkdsk tool to repair logical file system errors, the disk could become corrupted and cause BSOD and / or boot problems. “A small number of devices that have installed this update have reported that running chkdsk / f could corrupt their file system and the device might not boot.” is the official explanation from Microsoft.

If you have already been affected by the chkdsk problem, the following steps form a workaround to get out of your predicament:

  • The device should automatically boot into the Recovery Console after it fails to boot multiple times.
  • Select Advanced Options.
  • Select Command Prompt from the list of actions.
  • Once the command prompt opens, type: chkdsk / f
  • Allow chkdsk to complete the scan, this may take a while. Once complete, type: exit
  • The device should now start up as expected. If it restarts in Recovery Console, select Exit and continue with Windows 10.

Others who are currently unaffected by the chkdsk bug can leave the tool alone for now and the implementation of the update should ensure that you do not suffer from the issues described above.
