The next generation of games is approaching and the Xbox team is doing its part to inspire new talent.

Xbox Academy will help teach participants the basics of game design and development, as well as using popular tools like Unity.

Games were valued at $ 151.55 billion globally in 2019 and are expected to reach a value of $ 256.97 billion by 2025. This week, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt called games “the future of storytelling” ( while eating an extra spicy chicken wing).

The realistic graphics and deep storytelling in modern games can make movies feel dated in comparison. But such experiences require a great deal of effort to create and a wide range of talents including artists, musicians, modeling experts, actors / actresses, level designers, and of course developers.

Microsoft has more gaming talent under its roof than ever after a wave of studio acquisitions. Some of the world’s most renowned studios, including Rare, Obsidian, Ninja Theory, Double Fine, inXile, Turn 10, and Playground Games, have joined Microsoft’s ranks in recent years.

In announcing the launch of the Xbox Academy, Microsoft noted that many of those working in its game studios were first inspired to join the industry by watching and learning from industry legends. Now some of the Xbox legends hope to inspire others.

Gavin Raeburn, Studio Director at Playground Games, said:

“I am delighted that Playground Games is part of Xbox Academy and that our team members Maria Lee and Ryan Greene are able to share their experience and knowledge with game creators.

As a team, we are passionate about nurturing new talent in the industry, such as with our 12-month placement scheme for college students from relevant courses. This event is another great way to convey some of the experience within the studio to inspire the next generation of game creators. “

Curtis Le Blanc, East London Arts and Music (ELAM) Game Director, added:

“It’s a real pleasure to work with the talented folks at Playground Games and the Microsoft Store to deliver these sessions.

Many of the ELAM students have started their education in game development and other areas drawing on inspiration from industry leaders like the folks at Playground, so we know sessions like this are invaluable in ensuring tremendous growth opportunities. and UK employment are met “.

Xbox Academy is free, but spaces are limited. There are four spots available from September 12-13, and participants must be at least 16 years old.

Before their session, participants are asked to follow these steps:
