Earlier this year, Apple announced that the company will launch its ARM-based Apple Silicon. Recently, with the launch of new Mac devices with Apple M1 chipset, the company officially began the process of transition from Intel to Apple Silicon.
Now, according to the Bloomberg News report, Microsoft is also following Apple’s lead and is reportedly working on its own ARM-based chipset. The company is developing the new chip with support for Windows 10 and it is primarily for data centers, but it is also expected to power Surface devices.
The Redmond-based tech giant currently uses Intel-based processors for most of its Azure cloud services. Additionally, the company’s Surface line of devices is powered by Intel processors. But now, it looks like Microsoft is ready to move on.
The company recently worked with AMD and Qualcomm to design custom chips for the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro X, underscoring the fact that Intel could be replaced soon. But similar to Apple’s process, it is likely to happen in a staggered fashion.
Microsoft has reportedly been working to offer ARM-based chipset devices for quite some time and is also improving its support for the Windows 10 operating system. However, unlike Apple, the company has a much broader technology footprint.

Your product is used by different manufacturers and works with different chipsets. Therefore, everything that Microsoft creates must be widely compatible and universal. It will be interesting to see the development in this area.
Besides Apple and Microsoft, Amazon also poses a threat to Intel and AMD. The e-commerce giant, which is also the leading provider of cloud infrastructure with AWS, has its own ARM-based Graviton2 processors.
Although the newer chipsets based on the ARM architecture offer better performance, longer battery life and are cheaper, they still have a smaller market share and the majority of the market is dominated by Intel and AMD.
