Microsoft Edge tries to outperform Chrome with instant video calls and more

[ad_1]

The switch from Microsoft Edge to Chromium was arguably essential if it wanted to remain competitive against Chrome, but in doing so it lost some of its uniqueness. At the moment, browsers offer a very similar set of features.

But now Microsoft is trying to differentiate its browser a bit by adding some features that you won’t find in Chrome without adding extensions, including a quick video calling feature, a nifty new screenshot tool, and built-in price comparisons.

The video calling tool, Meet Now, might just be the coolest new feature. You will see the Meet Now button directly on the new tab page. Tap Meet Now and you can quickly create a link to start a video call with up to 50 people, without the need for any special software from anyone.

While just a year ago the idea of having an instant video call button in your browser might seem overkill, it could be a useful tool during, you know, these uncertain times. The feature will roll out to Edge “this month” and will arrive in Outlook on the web and the Windows 10 taskbar “in the coming weeks.”

Meanwhile, the screenshot tool not only allows you to select the specific part of a website that you want to capture, but also scroll down to capture an extra long image. Windows Insiders users also get early access to one of the features I miss about the old Edge, the ability to easily annotate inking-capable websites.

The price comparison feature allows you to create a product catalog using Edge’s ‘Collection’ tool, basically a built-in version of Pinterest, and then hit a new ‘compare price with other retailers’ button to do just that. It’s pretty basic, but the point is to have convenience built in.

Speaking of Pinterest, Microsoft is also rolling out a deeper Pinterest integration, making it easier to find products related to those in your collection. If you enable the Collections + Pinterest feature, you will be able to be redirected to Pinterest from your list of articles to find related content.
