The criminal investigation team from the Federal Police Commission and special forces arrived in the city of Mekelle on Wednesday.
According to a report by state media, Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporate (EBC), the special forces have already launched the hunt for criminals in coordination with the Ethiopian Defense Force.
The deployment of the federal police in Mekelle was difficult in the past due to a militant from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). In July 2018, some 40 highly armed members of the Federal Police were arrested upon arrival at Alula Aba Nega International Airport. They were sent with a warrant to arrest TPLF leaders involved in criminal activity.
The federal police did not reveal the specifics of the criminals for whom the operation is needed. However, it is understood that the Ethiopian government has been searching for TPLF leaders who refused to surrender to the Ethiopian Defense Forces.
The Ethiopian Defense Force took control of the city of Mekelle on Saturday after TPLF forces lost the war to the Ethiopian Defense Forces.
Meanwhile, residents of the city of Mekelle told an EBC reporter on Wednesday that normalcy had been restored in the city. One resident who did not say her name said “we were scared when the planes flew. Now it is peaceful and businesses are reopening. “
Another Mekelle resident said the Ethiopian Defense Force has been peaceful but looting in neighborhoods has become a problem. He said the government must do something about it.
The Ethiopian government granted access to humanitarian agencies of the UN nations in areas under the control of the Ethiopian Defense Forces.
There has been a communication blackout when the Ethiopian government was conducting a “law enforcement operation” to hunt down the TPLF leaders which turned out to be a full-blown war with the TPLF forces losing the war in a matter of two weeks.
The TPLF leaders justify the loss by claiming that they were also facing Eritrean armies. They promise to launch a guerrilla war.
