The Duchess of Sussex opened up about her experience with critics and the “vitriol and noise” thrown at her. She did so during an appearance at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women virtual summit on Tuesday.
Speaking with Fortune editor Ellen McGirt, Meghan confessed that a quote from American artist Georgia O’Keeffe helped her overcome the hateful comments.
She said: “I used to have a date in my room many, many moons ago and it resonates now perhaps more than ever when you see the vitriol and noise that may be in the world.
“It’s from Georgia O’Keeffe and it’s, ‘I figured it out myself, so the praise and the criticism go down the same drain and I’m pretty free.’
Meghan also pointed out that people won’t always agree with her.
She said, “There will always be detractors.”
″ The moment you are able to free yourself from all these other opinions, from what you know to be true, then I think it is very easy to live with the truth and live authentically and that is how I choose to move forward. the world.”
The duchess added that authenticity must prevail over what critics say.
She said, “I think it’s about being authentic.

She added: “The moment you can be freed from all these other opinions of what you know to be true, then I think it’s very easy to live with the truth and live authentically and that’s how I choose to move through the world. “
However, the Duchess stressed the importance of creating “human technology” in a digital world.
She said: ″ We have to bet on something that is true, and we need to have reliable media and news sources that tell us the truth … when you know something is wrong, report it, talk about it.
“It’s like we live in the future when you talk about bots and trolls and all these things.
“It sounds so fantastic, but that’s actually the current state of things and that’s shaping how we interact with each other online and offline, and that’s the piece that is important.
“It is not just an isolated experience. It transcends how you interact with those around you and certainly your own relationship with yourself. “
She said that some of the issues she and Prince Harry’s charity Archewell will address are misinformation and hate speech online.
Meghan said: “If you keep hitting this brick wall of, right now, what is happening in the digital space and online, then in many ways it is like taking two steps forward and five steps back.
“So part of our approach with Archwell is simply to make sure that we are helping foster healthy positive communities, online and offline, for our collective well-being.”
