Niantic has brought mega evolutions to Pokémon Go

Niantic Labs has finally brought Mega Evolutions to Pokémon Go. Mega Evolution is achieved with a new resource called Mega Energy that is obtained by fighting Mega Evolved Pokémon in raids. So far, only Beedrill, Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur can Mega Evolve, but more Pokémon are likely to unlock the ability as Niantic joins Pokémon Go. You can only have one Mega Evolved Pokémon at a time, just like only one Pokémon could Mega Evolve per battle in Pokémon X and Y. Pokémon Go is available for mobile devices right now, with Sword and Shield available to Nintendo Switch owners.

Mega Evolution Beedrill, Blastoise, Charizard, or Venusaur will dramatically increase their strength, making them important for defeating raid battles or capturing enemy gyms. A new Pokedex feature makes tracking which Pokémon you have mega evolved in the past much easier. Once Pokémon Go players have Mega Evolved a specific Pokémon only once, less Mega Energy will be required the next time the Pokémon is Mega Evolved. With the increased power of Mega Pokémon, they are likely to play an integral role in high-level Pokémon Go play.

Niantic will be holding several Mega Evolution themed events throughout September, and there will also be a new special research questline in the game that will make Mega Evolving your first Pokémon a little easier. While players are already using Mega Energy to evolve their original Kanto starter Pokémon, it is currently unknown when the special research quest line and subsequent events will begin. While it may take some time before Dynamax Pokémon are added to Pokémon Go, it will be fun to Mega evolve our Beedrill, Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur in the near future.

Will you play Pokémon Go to Mega evolve your Charizard, Venusaur or Blastoise? Let us know in the comments below!
