What’s new: Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek Inc. has applied to the US government for permission to continue supplying Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. after the new US restrictions take effect next month, MediaTek confirmed to Caixin.
“We have submitted our request to the US government and we are waiting” for a response, a MediaTek spokesman told Caixin on Friday. “MediaTek reaffirms our position that we abide by the rules and regulations related to world trade,” the spokesperson said.
The bottom: Earlier this month, the US Department of Commerce unveiled a set of rules restricting the sale of microchips and other technologies to Huawei.
According to the rules, any company in the world using any US technology will be prohibited from supplying chips to Huawei without first obtaining a license from the US government. The new rules added to an earlier policy announced in May granting companies a 120-day grace period to continue supplying Huawei.
After the announcement of the May rules targeting only companies that make chips for Huawei based on Huawei’s designs, MediaTek emerged as one of the few options for Huawei to get ready-to-go smartphone chipsets. .
