Manchester United began their Premier League campaign with a home loss to Crystal Palace when Wilfried Zaha scored two goals in the Eagles’ 3-1 win at Old Trafford.
United started the game with their only first-team signing of the summer, Donny van de Beek, on the bench, and Dean Henderson joined him while David de Gea kept his place in the team despite his uneven form in the last months.
United started the game slowly and Townsend used the lax defense of Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof to put the visitors in front.
Van de Beek came off the bench after the break and scored, but not before Palace doubled his lead with a controversial Wilfried Zaha penalty, and Zaha restored his team’s two-goal lead in the 85th minute.
The loss will raise further questions about United’s inactivity in the transfer market, with just over two weeks until the summer window closes.
United are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Luton in the League Cup.
