Real Madrid are reportedly ready to sell Raphael Varane this summer, if the central defender does not compromise his future with the club.
Varane’s current contract expires at the end of next season and there are concerns that he may be looking to exhaust him.
With Sergio Ramos’ future up in the air, Los Blancos would rather keep their central defender partner, but could be forced to act.
According to Marca, while a new contract for the 27-year-old remains a “priority” for Real, if he makes it clear that he will not sign a new contract, they will cash in this summer.
The report claims that Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Juventus are interested, and the interest of the Red Devils dates back to 2019.
That was the first time Varane considered leaving, with United and PSG waiting behind the scenes. On that occasion, the return of Zinedine Zidane was enough to convince him to stay, although it may not be enough this time.
United were widely linked with a high-profile signing with teammate Harry Maguire at the rear during the summer window. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to continue with his options, with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe all with opportunities.
However, their 30 goals conceded – a tally higher than all their title rivals – could force the Old Trafford bosses to move late in the campaign.
Following a 3-3 draw with Everton, in which United conceded the tie in injury time, United legend Paul Scholes said his old team must sign a defender on pace to join Maguire.
“His defense just hasn’t been good enough,” Scholes said. “It’s difficult to point it out as well because you look individually and they are fine. Maguire is a good defender.
“I still have question marks against Lindelof. I always.
“I don’t think he’s fast enough to play alongside Maguire, I don’t think he’s aggressive enough.”
If United want to get Varane, it is understood that the Spanish giants will seek around 50 million euros, especially amid their financial problems during the coronavirus pandemic.
