Manchester United’s new signing Donny van de Beek has revealed that Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp has warned him that the Premier League is a ‘very difficult’ league to play.
On Wednesday United announced the arrival of Van de Beek from Ajax in a deal worth around £ 40 million.
Van de Beek is dating Estelle Bergkamp, daughter of the Highbury hero.
Bergkamp spent 11 years in England at Arsenal and is widely regarded as one of the best foreigners to play in the Premier League.
And Van de Beek says Bergkamp gave him insight into the harsh demands of English football.
“He may have played for a different club but he is a legend in England and knows how things work in the Premier League,” he told De Telegraaf.
“He insists that it is very fun, but also very difficult to play.
“I’m going to optimally prepare for that.”
United have a decorated history of Dutch players who have become heroes at Old Trafford.
“As you know, I had a deal with Real Madrid and both clubs also had a deal. But for one reason or another, that deal was never confirmed on paper.
“The players who were supposed to leave decided to stay and Madrid withdrew.
“Of course I was disappointed and wondered if that opportunity to join a massive club would happen again in my career.
“OMG. Manchester United is an absolute dream. They are an absolutely fantastic club in the strongest competition in the world.
“I didn’t have to think for more than a second when the opportunity presented itself.”
