Manchester United legend Bryan Robson hailed Bruno Fernandes as “the closest we have had to Paul Scholes for years.”
Fernandes’ signing at the January transfer window turned out to be a master stroke, with United undefeated in 11 games and fifth in the Premier League table when football was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Fernandes played in nine of those games after his move from Sporting Lisbon, and the Portugal star has been credited for raising the performances of his teammates through his demanding attitude on the field and in training camp.
And Robson has compared the legendary midfielder Scholes, 25, one of the best players in United’s dominant era under Sir Alex Ferguson.
“The way before the shutdown was certainly encouraging,” Robson said in quotes reported by the Daily Mail. “The indications were that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been right.”

“When you combine that with Scott McTominay further enhancing Marcus Rashford’s chance of getting back into good physical shape, it looks good.”

United’s campaign improved greatly after Christmas, though one of the main distractions has refused to go away, namely the continuing uncertainty about Paul Pogba’s future amid continued interest in the injured midfielder from people like Real Madrid and Juventus.
But Robson, who won two Premier League titles with United, acknowledges the Red Devils’ form before the blockade can persuade Pogba that he can have a successful future at Old Trafford.
And he said United could be a true contender for honors again next season if they have a good transfer window, with players like Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and James Maddison on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s target list.
“We’ve even forgotten about Paul Pogba, but he may want to be on this team again once he’s in shape,” said Robson.
“Add two or three signings and United will be in great shape. There has been a lot of talk about people like Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and James Maddison, so we are looking in the right direction.”
