The Malawi team, which remains third in Group B of the 2022 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) after a goalless draw against group leaders Burkina Faso at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Monday, still has hopes of securing the classification.
Skipper John Banda has not given up hope of reaching the final in Cameroon despite a disappointing result on Monday.
The Flames’ dream of securing a ticket to the tournament suffered a minor setback with a 0-0 draw at home with the visitors.
Malawi now has four points and in third place in their group with Burkina Fasso in the top table with eight points followed by Uganda with seven points while South Sudan is anchoring the group with three points.
Malawi must win the task in their last two games against Uganda at home and South Sudan away to secure six points.
“We still have a chance to qualify. It’s not over yet. We still have two games left and anything can happen.
“We have the quality to beat Uganda, everything happens in football,” Banda said.
Coach Meke Mwase is also optimistic that his charges have “a chance” to seal the ranking.
On Monday, the Flames created plenty of scoring opportunities, especially in the second half, but lacked the killing blow early on.
Mwase deployed five natural defenders, three midfielders and two forwards, underscoring his quest not to let the visitors penetrate his baseline.
Flame’s strong defense kept Burkina Faso’s offensive trio of Aston Villa’s Bertrand Traore and compatriots Dayo Issoufu and Lassina Soudine at bay during the first half.
On the other hand, the host showed fluid football from back to front, while Ernest Kakhobwe’s man of the match denied the visitors scoring opportunities.
The first half ended in a stalemate and the score remained as such at the end of 90 minutes.
