M1 Mac mini teardown reveals first look at slim internals

As Apple’s new Mac M1s hit customers this week, we got our first look at the internals of the company’s first desktop with Apple Silicon. The M1 Mac mini has retained the same space as its predecessor Intel even though it seems that much less space was needed.

The Mac mini M1 offers truly impressive performance as Apple’s first desktop with a custom SoC. That said, there are some tradeoffs, such as the machine losing 2 USB-C / Thunderbolt ports and the RAM is no longer user-upgradeable (SSD is also not upgradeable).

YouTuber Brandon Geekabit appears to have shared the first teardown of the M1 Mac mini and offers a detailed description of what is happening on the new compact desktop.

The Mac mini M1 disassembles roughly the same as the previous version with some TR6 screws. In particular, Brandon brought out the new motherboard, it highlights how much less space Apple Silicon’s internals take up.

The Intel Mac mini 2018/2020 motherboard took up most of the desktop computer case minus the power supply, while the M1 motherboard probably took up 30-40% less space.

Perhaps with the second generation Mac mini M1 we will see a redesigned and much more compact form factor.

While some may be disappointed by the soldering / integration of RAM, SSD, etc. On the M1, Apple Silicon is the change in which Macs have become iPhones and iPads. Those who value the iPhone and iPad accept the trade-off that the user cannot upgrade them for the adjusted hardware / software and great performance.

As we’ve previously highlighted, the teardown also signals the switch to a silver case from space gray for the new Mac mini. Take a close look below or on YouTube:
