Leak Repair Fails to Stop Air Pressure Drop on International Space Station

Repairing a leak on the International Space Station (ISS) failed to stop the drop in air pressure on board, astronauts said Friday.

“Air pressure keeps dropping, but not so fast,” said astronaut Anatoly Ivanishin, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

The report comes the day after astronauts located the source of the leak after weeks of searching and reportedly sealed it with tape.

The astronauts, who found the leak by following a tea bag floating in zero gravity towards it, now want to better seal the hole.

“Perhaps we should use the most effective patches from our partners,” said the Russian astronaut, referring to his American colleagues.

Oxygen supply to the Russian Zvezda module also failed on Wednesday, although it remained in other segments of the space station, which is more than 20 years old.

In another incident, smoke rose from a device during an experiment in the Russian section. Then the power went out.

There are currently six astronauts aboard the ISS. Three of them are expected to return to Earth next Thursday.
