A coalition of Yoruba groups, prominent monarchs and thought leaders will converge in Ibadan on Wednesday to celebrate 134 years of peace and unity in Yorubaland after the Kiriji War.
The Kiriji War, also known as the Ekiti-Parapo War, was a 16-year civil war between the Yoruba people where all sub-ethnic groups supported Ibadan or Ekiti.
the Nigeria News Agency reports that the war came to an end on September 23, 1886, which marked the beginning of the unification of the Yorubaland as one.
Professor Banji Akintoye, event coordinator and general president of the Yoruba World Congress, said in a statement that September 23 would now be celebrated annually as Yoruba National Day.
Akintoye said prominent Yoruba monarchs and warrior families would return to the battlefields in Igbajo and Imesi Ile, Osun and Oke Imesi Ekiti on Tuesday to pour libations and dedicate the foundation stone to peace in the Yoruba land.
Said the chief of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo; Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu of the Yoruba Unity Forum, Judge Ademola Bakare (retired) of the Yoruba Council of Elders, and Professor Adetoun Ogunseye of the National Council for Yoruba Women, were among the eminent Yoruba thought leaders who would honor the occasion.
“The purpose of the two-day ceremony is to unite the people of the Yoruba Land to achieve prosperity and development.
He urged all Yoruba sons and daughters around the world to make their presence felt at events, both physically and morally.
