Large clear OLED displays to arrive and on display during CES

The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, has been one of the biggest tech events of the year. However, like most other major conventions, the ongoing pandemic has forced CES organizers to transform the 2021 show into a fully digital virtual event. However, that hasn’t stopped most of the bigger players at the event from sparking interest in its latest products, including LG, which has just announced some cutting-edge and transparent OLED displays that the company will showcase during its CES-related activities.

“Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the benefits of OLED and can be used in various places in our daily lives, from shops, shopping malls and architectural interiors to autonomous vehicles, subways and airplanes.” said Jong-sun Park, senior vice president and head of business unit at LG Display. He added, “It will become a next-generation display that can change the existing display paradigm.”

LG’s CES-related events will highlight a number of real-world applications where clear OLED displays could become prevalent. One of the screens will be used in a simulated bedroom setup. At the push of a button on a smart bed, a 55-inch clear OLED screen will rise up from within the bed frame. Another app has a large screen setup in a virtual sushi restaurant to display order status and other information, while allowing the customer and restaurant worker to communicate “through” the screen. Another demo has a transparent OLED that replaces the window of a train.

LG’s transparent OLED technology offers approximately 40% transparency, which is a marked improvement over the 10% transparency that is achieved with more traditional LCD displays. Although the units on display at CES are large-format displays, transparent screen technology has application in many market segments, from smartphones that will be capable of high-end cameras and sensors behind the screen to augmented and virtual reality headsets. , which would allow users to see through the HMD.
