VALENCIA, Spain: Kibiwott Kandie of Kenya broke the men’s world record for a half marathon in Valencia on Sunday in a time of 57 minutes 32 seconds.
His spectacular performance was almost half a minute faster than the previous record of 58min 01sec set by compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor in September 2019.
In perfect race conditions, Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo chased after 24-year-old Kandie, crossing the line just five seconds away, in a setback from the October world championship result.
The top four at home all fell short of the previous best mark.
Genzebe Dibaba in his debut in the distance won the women’s race in 1 hour 05:18.
On a memorable day for Kenyan athletics, Evans Chebet and Peres Epchirchir won both marathons with the best times of the season.
Chebet won the men’s race in 2 hours 03 minutes 00 seconds with Epchirchir victorious in the women’s event in 2 hours 17:16.
For the first time, the top 30 in the men’s marathon arrived in less than 2 hours and 10 minutes.
