Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala inspired Kenya to a 3-0 victory over Ethiopia in the opening match of this year’s Cecafa U-20 Championship on Monday at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha.
The Kisumu Day student headed in the opener in the 37th minute, before Ronald Reegan added the second for the Rising Stars in the 46th minute. Omala then set up Enoch Wanyama to score the third goal 13 minutes from time.
Omala was pleased with the result and admitted that she has set her sights on the competition’s Golden Boot award.
“Opening my scoring account was important to me in the first game as I am aiming for the golden boot. I have to keep scoring even in the next game to achieve my goal,” Omala told Nation Sport by phone after the game .
The result leads Kenya to the top of Group C with three points clear of their second game against Sudan on Friday at the same place. Ethiopia will face Sudan in their next match on Wednesday.
Stanley Okumbi’s charges will look to go one better after finishing second in the 2019 edition held in Uganda after losing 1-0 to Tanzania.
The two finalists of the tournament win places for the final phase of the African Cup of Nations U-20 of 2021 set for Cameroon.
