The competition for youth national teams is expected to produce the team to represent the region in the next edition of Afcon.
Kenya and Uganda have been grouped into Group B of the Cecafa U17 Championship following a draw that took place in Arusha, Tanzania.
The two leading teams in the U-17 qualifiers, to be played in Rwanda, will qualify to represent the region in the U17 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament. The Afcon youth tournament will be held in Morocco in 2021.
Ethiopia are the other opponents in a group that is expected to be the toughest, especially given the recent rivalry between Kenya and the Uganda Cubs.
Tanzania has been selected along with Sudan and Djibouti in Group C, while Rwanda, Eritrea and South Sudan are in Group A.
The championship is scheduled to take place between December 13 and 28 in Rwanda, where the Cecafa Kagame Club Cup was held in 2019.
The best team in each group and the best runners-up will qualify for the semi-finals.
For its part, Cecafa also held the draw for the U20 competition to be held in Tanzania.
Kenya has avoided Uganda in the group stage as they landed in a group that has northern neighbors Ethiopia and Sudan and this is the only group with three participants.
Tanzania, Rwanda, Somalia, Djibouti are in Group A, while Group B is expected to be a fairly uneventful ride for Uganda given that they have been grouped alongside Burundi, Eritrea and South Sudan.
The top three teams from Group A and B will enter the quarterfinals where they will be joined by the top two teams from Group C. The winner of the U20 competition will seal a place in the U20 Afcon tournament to be held in Mauritania in 2021.
The tournament is scheduled to run from November 22 to December 6 before the focus shifts to U17 competition.
So far no country has confirmed their participation or withdrawn from the tournament, as the focus is now on Afcon’s next doubles matches scheduled for November.
