Keanu Reeves is Cyberpunk 2077 canon, apparently • Eurogamer.net

Keanu Reeves is Cyberpunk 2077 canon, it seems.

That’s actor Keanu Reeves as much as Johnny Silverhand, the real-life character Keanu Reeves plays in the upcoming CD Projekt game.

This is all due to the recent release of the music video for “No Save Point” by Yankee and the Brave, the fictional Cyberpunk group played by American hip hop supergroup Run The Jewels. No Save Point is a song that will be heard in Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 – No save point for Yankee and the Brave (Run the Jewels)

The whole thing is very Cyberpunk, unsurprisingly, and rather nondescript, apart from a lyric that has certainly made tongues move within the game’s lore community: “Keanu Reeves, the cybernetic arm up my sleeve,” Killer raps Mike

It’s just a music video for a song that’s in the game, but this is Cyberpunk and so lore is serious business. Why would you listen to lyrics about Keanu Reeves in the world of Cyberpunk?

That’s the question that prompted an explanation from Patrick K. Mills, Cyberpunk 2077’s senior mission designer, who took to Twitter to confirm that Keanu Reeves’ lyrics are “friendly to tradition.”

How is that? Well, according to Mills, the lyrics are an in-universe culture reference to Keanu Reeves, “a little-known actor from the Collapse era who bore a striking resemblance to Johnny Silverhand.” In the Cyberpunk universe, Keanu Reeves was frequently mistaken for Johnny Silverhand in the years after Johnny’s disappearance.

It sounds a bit forced, but let’s get on with it: The Collapse is a period of time within the Cyberpunk lore that includes the fall of Western civilization. The Cyberpunk timeline diverges from the real world around the 90s, and the Collapse occurs shortly after that divergence.

Keanu Reeves (the real Keanu Reeves!) Was born in 1964, so he would have been talking about the pre-Collapse Cyberpunk timeline. Too bad that Cyberpunk Reeves ‘life didn’t unfold as amazingly as Reeves’ real life did.

Whoops!

Actually, it’s all a bit fun; at worst, a little jarring, at best a nod to the existence of celebrities in the virtual world. I’ve seen some people take all of this very seriously, worrying about timelines and whether or not Keanu Reeves should be canon within the world of Cyberpunk 2077.

Well it is! As you drive the world, trade organs for technology, and work your way to stardom, you might hear a song on the radio about Keanu Reeves. Who was that again? Oh yeah, some old actor, apparently still hanging around, who looks a lot like Johnny Silverhand.
