José Mourinho sends cryptic message after VAR controversy in Tottenham’s draw with Newcastle

José Mourinho refused to comment publicly on the late handball controversy during Tottenham’s draw with Newcastle United, but has since posted a cryptic message on his Instagram account.

The Spurs were denied victory over Newcastle by a last-gasp penalty, scored in injury time by Callum Wilson.

The penalty was awarded, following a VAR control, after an Andy Carroll header struck Eric Dier’s arm from close range.

It seemed like a tough call and sparked outrage from fans and experts alike.

Mourinho burst into the tunnel when the tie came in, but said he had nothing to say about it in his post-match interviews.

However, he later posted a photo on Instagram of himself, apparently making a handcuffed gesture.

The image, accompanied by the caption “A photo of 10 years”, was from his time at Inter Milan in 2010.

Mourinho received a three-match penalty from the Serie A touchline and a € 40,000 fine for “insulting a referee.”

During the match against Sampdoria at the San Siro stadium, he was repeatedly photographed crossing and raising his arms in front of fans and television cameras, as if handcuffed, after two of his players were sent off.

Mourinho has been taking more penalties in the Premier League since then, with various touchline bans and fines he received during his time in England.

However, the Spurs coach said he did not want to risk another penalty or a fine while facing the media after the game.
