The original Pixelbook performs well, but it appears that Google no longer makes the premium convertible Chromebook. Now it shows as “No longer available” in the Google Store, and when asked by Engadget about this, the company did not say it would return and instead pointed to the Pixelbook Go to buyers.
This isn’t surprising given the age of the OG Pixelbook (it came out in 2017), but what’s puzzling is that Google hasn’t looked to update it since. It was pretty much the perfect Chromebook, albeit expensive and overpowered given the limitations of the operating system. The form factor was perfect, the 3: 2 high-resolution screen was perfect for productivity, and the keyboard was unrivaled for a laptop.
We’ve all been asking for a modest update with improved internals and a bigger screen with smaller bezels, which may still come at some point, although there are no rumors of such a device announcement on Google’s Launch Night late of this month. . We only know that about the Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G, the new Google Chromecast / Google TV dongle, and the new Nest Audio speaker, but maybe there’s a surprise in store: Don’t hold your breath.
There may still be some Pixelbook stock in some local stores if someone was still planning to buy one, but the Pixelbook Go is now the only Google laptop or tablet still available to buy outright. The much-maligned Pixel Slate was discontinued after a much shorter run, but no one will have lamented that loss like the original Pixelbook. RIP
