After days of denial, a senior Sudanese official revealed yesterday that an Israeli military delegation visited his country and toured military sites, Israeli and international media reported.

In an interview with the Arab news website Saga, the youngest member and spokesman of the Transitional Council of Sovereignty of Sudan, Mohammad Al-Fiki Suleiman, said: “It was a delegation of a military nature and nothing more.”

Meanwhile, the Arab news Al-Fiki reported that the visit was military in nature and did not include political discussions. The Israeli military delegation met with its Sudanese counterpart, he explained.

“In addition to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all civilian and military members of the Sovereign Council are partners on the issue of normalization” with Israel, he explained.

Last week, Israeli media reported on the visit of an Israeli delegation to Khartoum, but Sudanese government spokesman Faisal Mohammed Saleh denied the news, saying AFP that “the cabinet is not aware of an Israeli delegation and we have no confirmation that this visit has taken place.”

Sudan followed the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to become the third Arab government to engage with Israel with the encouragement of Washington, which sees such contacts help isolate Iran and circumvent stalled talks on Palestinian statehood.

The normalization agreement between Israel and Sudan, which was announced on October 23, has yet to be formally signed and requires parliamentary approval.
