TEHRAN – Saeed Khatibzadeh, a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, condemned a rocket attack on civilians in Kabul on Saturday.
In a statement on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said Khatibzadeh condemned terrorist attacks against civilians and non-military sites in Afghanistan after a burst of rockets struck the Afghan capital, Kabul, one of which slammed into the Iranian embassy. .
“When asked by journalists about reports that multiple rockets had hit buildings in Kabul on Saturday, including at the Iranian embassy premises, Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh condemned any terrorist attack against the Afghan people or civilian sites, “the statement said.
Khatibzadeh also expressed his sympathy for the government and people of Afghanistan, in particular the grieving families of the victims of the terrorist attack.
He added: “According to the inspection, at least one rocket has hit the internal facilities of the Iranian embassy in Kabul so far in today’s terrorist missile attack at various locations in Kabul, including the diplomatic quarter of the city.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the rocket attack has caused minor damage to some facilities and equipment within the Iranian embassy, but fortunately has not posed any danger to embassy staff.
On Saturday morning, a burst of rockets hit several Kabul districts, killing at least eight people and wounding several more. The attack took place an hour after two IED explosions rocked the city. The Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.
The Iranian embassy in Kabul announced that two rockets landed inside the embassy premises, including one that did not explode.
“One of the rockets fired this morning, November 21, 2020, landed at the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kabul and several shrapnel hit the main building, glass, facilities and equipment of the embassy,” the embassy said in one tweeted, adding that the attack caused no casualties among embassy staff.
Also on Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif spoke by phone with his Afghan counterpart, Mohammad Haneef Atmar, who was recently officially appointed as Afghanistan’s foreign minister. Atmar had served as Acting Foreign Minister.
The chief Iranian diplomat congratulated Atmar on being appointed foreign minister and expressed Iran’s readiness to continue cooperation with Afghanistan.
The Afghan Foreign Minister, for his part, thanked Zarif for his congratulations and highlighted Kabul’s determination to comprehensively boost Afghanistan’s relations with Iran.
