We are one day away from the October 23 launch of the iPhone 12Although reviews and test results of Apple’s new phone are already popping up on the internet. And while the iPhone 12 is receiving favorable marks, there is one area that has received criticism, including that of Tom’s Guide. The battery life of the iPhone 12 is not up to scratch.
Our IPhone 12 Battery Test Results points a finger at 5G, which absorbs a lot of power. But there could also be another problem, as seen in a recent iPhone 12 teardown video.
That video, posted by this technology It shows all the internals of the iPhone 12 for everyone to see before they can pick up a new phone. While the entirety of the teardown is certainly informative enough, what’s really intriguing is the unit’s smaller battery, even smaller than that of the iPhone 11.

The battery is not significantly smaller, but there is a rather noticeable difference. Previous teardowns have suggested that the iPhone 11 has a 3,110 mAh battery. Apple doesn’t officially announce the size of the batteries, but rumors have suggested that the iPhone 12 has a 2,815 mAh or 2,775 mAh power pack. Either size would be a decrease from what kept the iPhone 11 on.
Hopefully, the internal components of the iPhone 12 have been scaled down. It’s a smaller unit, overall. The new phone measures 5.8 x 2.8 x 0.29 inches, compared to 5.9 x 3 x 0.33 inches for the iPhone 11. In that teardown video, you can see how many of the internals have been reduced, allowing for a slimmer profile. .
However, battery life seems to be one of the victims. We tested the phone’s batteries by having the device surf the web via cellular connectivity with the screen set to 150 nits of brightness until the phone runs out of power. There are other ways to measure battery life, but this gives us a way to compare the longevity of different phones.
The iPhone 12 test time is below average for smartphones at 8 hours and 25 minutes. Partly that’s because of 5G, because when we disabled the ability to connect to a 5G network, the iPhone 12’s time in that test improved to 10 hours and 23 minutes.
Still, 5G alone explains a lot. The iPhone 11, with its bigger battery and no 5G connection to deal with, lasted 11 minutes and 16 seconds, which is still one of the best phone battery life results we’ve seen.
That kind of information is what makes the teardown of the iPhone 12 such an intriguing prospect. If the shorter battery life isn’t something to bother you, the iPhone 12 may be a good fit for your needs.
