Apple has already confirmed that the iPhone 12 line will be delayed, but a new exclusive report has revealed that it is only half the story.
Bloomberg’s dynamic duo Debby Wu and Mark Gurman have confirmed that Apple will be forced to split the launch of the new iPhone 12 in two. This apparently contradicts comments from Apple CFO Luca Maestri last month that the models would only be “a few weeks” late.
Breaking this down, Wu and Gurman explain that Apple will first launch the (super small) iPhone 12 and the (renamed) iPhone 12 Plus with the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max releases “on track to be the last since the launch of the iPhone X in November 2017. “The duo say this is primarily due to the Coronavirus pandemic, although performance issues with their ProMotion displays (the feature is still in doubt) have clearly been a factor as well.
So why would Maestri suggest that the rank was only delayed for a few weeks? My guess is semantics. Most likely Maestri was referring to when the new models (still hotly contested and clouded by Apple itself) will be announced, rather than when they will go on sale. But it is the latter that everyone cares about.
That said, lag is unlikely to be the biggest concern on the minds of iPhone 12 updaters. Big achievements like its sleek new designs, (potentially) game-changing performance, and retail prices (speaking in relative terms), have been affected by Apple’s removal of accessories and the decision to shrink its batteries.
For my money, the new best-value iPhone will launch early next year but, for anyone still vacillating between the entry-level and Pro models of the iPhone 12, the momentum is moving rapidly towards the iPhone 12 and iPhone. 12 Plus.
