The dating game may never be the same again, that’s right: iPhone 12 Pro can measure people’s height.
One of the new features of Apple’s latest premium phone was the introduction of a LiDAR sensor. If you’re not sure what this is, we’ve put together a pretty useful explainer here, but basically LiDAR is like a lightweight version of sonar.
The lens shoots rays and then tracks how long they take to return. This allows the computer to understand and map space, as it can accurately measure the shape and distance between things.
And so folks, it’s how the iPhone 12 Pro can measure people’s height. (This is the part where I shake my head, say “tech,” and fill a pipe.)

I have an iPhone 12 Pro, how can I measure people’s height?
First of all: strange question. I’m not sure just because you power measure the height of the people you should. But hey, I am here to convey information, not to be the referee of what you do with such knowledge.
Let’s get into it. Your opening move is to activate the Measure app on your iPhone 12 Pro (or iPad Pro 2020, as it also has a LiDAR sensor). Next, make sure the person you are measuring is fully framed. At this point (but be patient), the Measure app should notice the person and give you their height.

Is this function good?
It’s incredibly cool. And it’s a good example of where LiDAR technology can go in a few years. Imagine being able to point your phone at your feet and receive recommendations on the shoes that best fit you.
That being said, I have played with height measurement and as good as it is, it is not entirely precise. You can be fooled by the shape of your hair, if you are wearing a hat, and I found that there was a little variation depending on where you were standing.
Despite saying that, they all gave pretty minor variations, and I was really impressed with the whole experience.
Well there you have it all! A quick and easy way to measure people’s height with your new iPhone 12 Pro. That should keep those Tinder guys honest.
