The iPad Pro and MacBook Pro will be the first Apple devices to use the new Mini-LED display technology. So says a DigiTimes report, citing industry sources.
An earlier rumor had it that an early 2021 update to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be Apple’s first product to use Mini-LEDs, with new MacBooks coming in the second half of the year. Apparently 10,000 Mini-LEDs will be used on each screen.
Mini-LED, as the name suggests, is a version of normal LED displays that uses smaller LED light sources. This should turn out much better when it comes to brightness and color. However, the Mini-LED is currently between 20% and 30% more expensive than the standard LED, which means that it will remain a premium option for now.
Mini-LED was originally on track to appear in devices this year, according to reports. The coronavirus and associated crashes spoiled those plans, so we only expect to see the first Apple Mini-LED machines appear in 2021. However, DigiTimes says rival laptop makers will also start using the new technology early next year. year.
The displays will reportedly be manufactured by Epistar, a Taiwanese manufacturer. While this is the only confirmed vendor, it is about to join Malaysia-based Osram Opto, according to DigiTimes. Osram Opto currently makes display components for Apple Watch and iPhone devices, but will switch to Mini-LED parts, specifically for the newer MacBook Pros. Meanwhile, Epistar will produce Mini-LED components for iPad Pro.
Given that Apple is reportedly planning to switch more of its displays to Mini-LED technology, it makes sense to hear that it is finding more production partners to help provide the necessary parts. DigiTimes also claims that Apple is also evaluating a third company, Sanan Optoelectronics of China, as a Mini-LED supplier.
While you will likely have to wait until 2021 for these Mini LED devices, Apple should have a host of other products right around the corner. Apple’s big iPhone 12 event is slated to take place on October 13 and could also mark the unveiling of products like AirPods Studio, AirTags, and the first Apple Silicon MacBook.
