Sachin Tendulkar has revealed that he has contracted coronavirus and has mild symptoms as infections continued to rise in India, the second most populous country in the world.
The heavy hitter, who will turn 48 next month, retired from professional play in 2013 after amassing 100 international centuries still unmatched in a prolific 24-year career. He recently returned to the group as the captain of the India Legends team at a promotional event called the Road Safety World Series in Raipur, Chhattisgarh state.
“I have been testing myself and taking all recommended precautions to ensure that Covid is kept at bay. However, today I tested positive for mild symptoms, ”Tendulkar tweeted. “Everyone else at home tested negative. I have quarantined myself at home and follow all the necessary protocols as recommended by my doctors. “
India reported 62,258 new infections on Saturday, its highest level since October, bringing its tally to 11.91 million. The death toll increased by 291 to 161,240.
Tendulkar lives in Mumbai, the capital of the western state of Maharashtra, which has been hit hardest by a resurgence of cases. Maharashtra has seen a steady rise in infections and recorded an all-time high of 36,902 new cases on Friday, and India’s commercial capital Mumbai also reported a high of 5,515 cases.
The state government announced a nightly curfew starting Sunday to halt the spread of the virus, while authorities could also impose local closures in some districts after informing people in advance.
