Hyundai is not the only company or automaker to throw its hat into the ring to bring flying taxis to life, but could be the most optimistic. As Hyundai continues work with Uber On technology, José Muñoz, CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, believes we are getting closer to take-off, according to statements Reuters reported on Monday.
Muñoz told the media during an Automotive Press Association teleconference that Hyundai expects air taxis to hit the Los Angeles and New York City skylines by 2028, or “maybe sooner.” Hyundai declined to comment further when asked about the executive’s comments.
It’s an optimistic timeline for a technology that is, 1, barely ready for prime time yet, and 2, is beyond a wall of bureaucracy. City regulation is far from ready for a huge increase in the number of small planes flying around the horizons. We have a long way to go, as does autonomous car technology.
Still, Hyundai and Uber look to the future with bright eyes when it comes to flying taxis. Muñoz said the automaker has already built flying-suitable vehicles that can seat five to six passengers and travel for short-haul flights. However, he does not envision the airplane as a vehicle to go everywhere. Instead, they may be able to pick up passengers from urban or suburban locations and then fly to a major airport. Even if we get flying taxis in just seven years, they won’t be ready to grab you from your home and drive you to your friend’s house a few miles away.
