(Pocket-lint): Facebook is introducing a news filter bar feature that will give you more precise control over your news. Basically, it allows you to view posts chronologically, or by most recent ones, in the order they were posted, just toggling your usual algorithmic feed.
Technically, the company has offered users the option to sort feeds by “most recent”, but buried it in a settings menu. Facebook also launched a Favorites feature last October that allows users to select up to 30 friends and Pages for Facebook to display their posts in a separate feed. Now Favorites and Recents are front and center at the top of the news feed in separate tabs.
How the Facebook Feed Filter Bar Works
By default, Facebook’s news feed uses a process called ranking to show you posts that the social network thinks are relevant to you. But Facebook is now implementing what it calls the News Filter Bar. It allows you to easily switch between three different newsfeed options:
- Home (or Top Stories): Facebook’s algorithmically optimized news feed, where you decide which popular posts to show you first.
- Favorites: A news feed that shows posts from your 30 friends and “favorites” pages. (Go here to learn how to manage favorites.)
- Recent: A chronological news feed that shows recent posts shared by your friends and pages, in the order they were posted.
The idea is that with the feed filter bar, you can better explore the content that all your friends and pages share with you. For example, to see only recent posts, you can sort your news feed to view your Recent feed. This means that you will see recent posts from the people and pages you follow, but you will see the most recent posts first. Alternatively, you can view posts from your favorite friends.

Note: Facebook said you can update Favorites at any time. (From the down arrow, go to Settings & Privacy> Newsfeed Preferences> Manage Favorites. Then, to select a Favorite, click the star icon next to a friend or page.)
When will the power filter bar unfold?
This feed filter bar was launched globally on March 31, 2021 for the Facebook Android app and will be coming to the iOS app “in the next few weeks.”
It is unclear if it will be available on the web version of Facebook.
Power filter bar disappeared?
The news filter bar will appear to all Facebook users when displayed, but if you don’t access it for a period of seven days (by toggling between the Favorites or Recents tab), it may disappear from your view. To find it, swipe up in the news feed again and it will reappear.
