iOS 14 is now available to download for iPhone 6s and later, and this time the CarPlay experience is getting a massive update.
Getting started with CarPlay after installing iOS 14 is as easy as it was in the previous version of the operating system.
If you previously used CarPlay on the same iPhone, just connect the device to the head unit and everything should work automatically. Otherwise, you have to pair the two devices, so just connect your iPhone to the car; If wireless CarPlay is available, press and hold the voice button on the steering wheel to start setup.
Then on the iPhone, tap on your car’s name in Settings> General> CarPlay and that’s it.
After the update to iOS 14, CarPlay also supports wallpapers, and to set a new background, you have to go to the built-in settings screen. In other words, the wallpapers can be set directly from CarPlay and not from your iPhone. Just tap on the image you want to use as the background and it will be applied instantly.
iOS 14 also comes with a number of new app categories, including EV loading and ordering food, but these must be installed in CarPlay before you can use them. It goes without saying that the developers themselves must update their apps to support the in-car experience.
There are also other improvements for CarPlay users.
Starting with this update, Apple Maps displays alerts for traffic lights and speed cameras on your route. Obviously, receiving these notifications is quite simple, since you only need to use Apple Maps for navigation; in fact, Google Maps also gets traffic light information on all supported platforms.
Siri also comes with new capabilities in CarPlay, so starting with this update, you can send voice messages and ETA while driving. To use them, just say “Hello Siri, send a voice message“OR”Hello Siri, share my ETAAnd then follow the instructions provided to complete everything.
