The PS5 made its full debut to a global audience online with Sony revealing how much it will cost and when it will launch, except in China.
Just over a week after Microsoft revealed how much of its own series of next-gen game consoles, Sony has announced the key details of its new PS5, seven years after the launch of the PS4. The Japanese tech giant first revealed the PS5 during an event in March this year showcasing a console that features a custom GPU for higher resolution gaming, ray tracing, and an ultra-high-speed SSD for better load times.
It has now confirmed that the PS5 will hit stores on November 12 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. The global launch will begin on November 19, except in China and Sony said a launch date “is still under exploration.”
In terms of pricing, the PS5 entry-level digital edition will cost € 399.99 at launch, while the PS5 with an additional Blu-ray disc drive will cost € 499.99. Pre-orders will be available starting today (September 17) at select retailers.
Sony said both models will be equally matched in terms of performance and capable of playing in 4K resolution.
“Since we first announced our next-generation console last year, we’ve received amazing support from developers and game fans around the world, and it’s truly a humbling experience,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) executive.
“We are now only a couple of months away from the launch of the PS5, which will deliver a new generation of experiences that go beyond the expectations of gamers for how games look, feel, sound and play.”
Legacy of the PS4
Backward compatibility, which would allow playing PS4 games on the new console, was also highlighted during the presentation. A new PlayStation Plus collection including some of the best-selling PS4 games will be available for download on the PS5 for existing members of their monthly subscription, PS Plus.
Speaking to The Washington Post, Ryan said that “99pc” of PS4 games will be playable on the PS5 with expectations that the soon-to-be-replaced console will have a remaining useful life of up to four years.
“Many will move to the PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will remain committed to the PS4,” he said.
Microsoft’s pricing structure for the new Xbox console is noticeably different than the PS5, and the entry-level Xbox Series S costs € 299 when it launches a couple of days earlier than the PS5 on November 10. However, unlike the two versions of the PS5, the Xbox Series S will be “as powerful as the Xbox One X” and will be geared towards 1080p monitors with better frame rates.
Meanwhile, the more powerful Xbox Series X, priced at 499 euros, will allow 4K resolution and 60 frames per second as standard, with some games running 120 frames per second in multiplayer.
