How ‘Immortals Fenyx Rising’ ended up with the worst name of the year

2020 is a year full of games with questionable titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but Ubisoft “Immortal Fenyx Rising“takes the cake with the worst game title of the year. Match three words at random, lacks sensitive punctuation, intentional misspellings of Phoenix as Fenyx (that’s right, it’s the protagonist’s name), and overall, it just doesn’t have grammatical sense.

Since the game previously known as Gods and monsters was re-revealed at Ubisoft Forward last week, new information has emerged as to why the name was changed. It involves not only a change of direction for Immortal Fenyx Rising but also legal problems with Monster Energy.

The game itself seems entertaining as it is inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and incorporates elements of Greek mythology so that players can wield amazing powers and fight fantastic monsters, hence the gods and monsters. Still, even ReversePositive impressions of the game are somewhat clouded by the game’s questionable title change from Gods and monsters to Immortal Fenyx Rising. It sounds like a fun game, but why is it called that?

Developers have been asked this same question in various interviews. “The name change was entirely due to the vision of the game,” said associate director of the game, Julien Galloudec, in an interview published on September 10 by Chronicle of videogames. He also explained that the game changed quite a bit after it was pushed back from February to December.

The “Immortals” part of the title is supposed to represent all the Greek gods and mythology that players will encounter during the game.

“The game changed a lot, to the point where we felt we needed a new name to be better aligned with that updated vision, so that’s where we decided to switch to Immortal Fenyx Rising“he said. Ubisoft believes this new name works because Immortals touches on “the timeless aspect of Greek mythology” while Fenyx rising indicates that this new character is embarking on an exciting adventure. (Why isn’t it called “Immortals: Fenyx Rising” then?)

Behind the scenes, however, there appears to be a legal reason behind the change.TechRaptor reports that Monster Energy filed opposition documents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office alleging that the name infringed on its own Monsters copyright.

Even though Ubisoft initially fought this dispute, it appears that they instead decided to change the name of the game from Gods and monsters to something else to avoid legal disputes. While this is an unfortunate title change, the decision likely saved Ubisoft a lot of time and money it would have taken to obtain the rights to the somewhat generic title of Gods and monsters. It remains to be seen if Monster Energy will come next. Love and monsters, a movie whose trailer just premiered on Tuesday. No monster is safe.

the Reverse Analysis – The truth is most likely somewhere in the middle of both reports. While Ubisoft might already have been considering a name change to signify the project’s changing vision, Monster Energy’s rejection, and the vagueness of a title like Gods and monsters it must have made a name change the most attractive and easy option.

Still, why did Ubisoft have to decide Immortal Fenyx Rising? It is very clumsy to say and write. It would be better if it came down to just Immortals or alone Fenyx rising on your own. Even a colon after “Immortals” would make more sense. The name almost certainly won’t change again, but now we at least have an idea how Gods and monsters ended up getting such a questionable title change.

Immortal Fenyx Rising It will be released for all major platforms on December 3, 2020.
