Look at it from most perspectives and you’d be inclined to feel like 2020 has been different than any year we’ve seen in a long time. Life as we know it has been altered for millions of people around the world and that holds true for the way businesses are run as well. Some have taken a blow for the worse, while others have moved on to have a rather unusual time in a peculiar year. Take the case of the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple. 2020, in terms of product launches, has been an unusually busy year for Apple.
In a year in which the world was hit by a pandemic, Apple has been producing products like never before. Interestingly, the company is holding another big event tomorrow, where more new hardware is expected to be unveiled.
From March to May 2020, possibly the most difficult period of the year in terms of crashes and interrupted lives, Apple had a pretty busy time. In March, Apple released the new iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard and the Macbook Air. April saw the launch of long-awaited ‘affordable’ iPhone SE while the 13-inch MacBook Pro was introduced to the world in May. Now, except for the MacBook Pro, these are not really product ‘variants’. The new iPad Pro has the LiDar scanner and a completely new camera system. The iPhone SE is the smallest and most affordable iPhone that Apple has made in a long time.
The next three months of the year were relatively uneventful for Apple, as the only product in its stable was an iMac with a Retina 5K display.
Traditionally, September is the most important month of the year for Apple, as this is when the new iPhones are introduced. However, the company dropped a hint in late June that iPhones will be delayed due to the pandemic and how its supply chain had been affected. However, Apple held a virtual event in September and two new iPads and two new ones came out. Apple watch Models. The iPad lineup got a completely new design for the iPad Air, while the entry-level iPad also got an update. For the first time since its launch in 2015, Apple released two new Apple Watch models: the Watch Series 6 and the Watch SE. The Watch SE, as the name suggests, is a toned down version of the premium Apple Watch Series 6 and costs relatively less.
With last September, all eyes moved to October when Apple released up to four new iPhones. This is the first time in history that Apple has launched four models at the same time and they come iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. All four iPhones bring their own set of features and are aimed at different sections of the iPhone buyer audience.
October wasn’t just about iPhones, as a new smart speaker in the form of the HomePod mini was also unveiled.
It’s November now and Apple will host another event tomorrow. The company led by Tim Cook is expected to introduce new MacBook models that will be powered by their own processors. It is rumored that the two variants of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air could be featured.
Five iPhones, two Apple Watch models, three MacBooks, three iPads, and a smart speaker – that’s a lot of hardware to launch in a year that’s been anything but normal. To be fair, even 2019 was a pretty busy year for Apple as it had a launch wave with up to 13 launches. However, the way 2020 started and how it has turned out, it has been a huge surprise to see these many new products from Apple.
