Homeless rally in Baltimore, demand that city leaders do more to help them – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Members of the homeless community and their advocates demonstrated at Baltimore City Hall on New Years Day. They shared a list of demands they have for city leaders, a petition on behalf of the city’s homeless.

One group lives under the Interstate 83 bypass bridge in a camp that they say is only growing by the day.

“Sleeping under the bridge and all that,” Ashford Davis said. “Man, it’s cold as bone. Down there, how can you sit back and let that happen? Pass and bypass. That is not right!”

As temperatures continue to drop, despair continues to grow.

The tents are located under the Jones Falls Expressway in downtown Baltimore as part of a camp for the homeless.

“They have a right to feel desperate,” said advocate Christina Flowers. “We have disappointed them, not only as media and public. We see them sleeping under these bridges. “

Demand that elected city leaders do more.

“No one from the city is committing us to solutions,” added Flowers.

They say that two homeless women have died in the camp, including Lisa, Michael Webster’s wife.

“She was my other half,” Webster said.

In a statement earlier this month, Mayor Brandon Scott offered his condolences to the families of the two women who died and said he is committed to making homelessness in our city rare and brief.

Michael and others say they need things like alternative housing, job opportunities, and trauma therapy after living a life on the streets for years.

“I’ve been here seven years, not because I wanted to, but because I missed every loophole,” Webster said. “I’m just tired. We’re all out here, we’re all tired. “

This group said they promise to have more demonstrations here at City Hall until they get a response from city leaders.
