Hitman 3 PC players need to re-purchase Hitman 2 levels

PC gamers who are eagerly awaiting the incoming Hitman 3 can have an additional purchase if they want to experience Hitman 2 levels on launch day.

Veterans of the series waiting to play Hitman 3 on PC you may have to buy content from Hitman 2 if they want the full experience, unlike their luckier console counterparts. Despite the rocky road from the first game in 2016, the next release of Hitman 3 it will complete the trilogy on the developer’s terms and allow them to pursue other franchises in the future.

Because IO Interactive does not now have a major publisher backing its latest game, the company has made deals with various platform holders to help finance the launch. On the console side, Sony has marketed the game as a PlayStation exclusive, despite the game coming to Xbox and Switch on the day and date. The game will feature a PlayStation VR mode for PlayStation 4 players, the first in the series. PC is where things get trickier, as IO has signed on with Epic Games for the usual exclusivity deal at the Fortnite manufacturer’s showcase. Hitman 3 is meant to carry forward the progress of the previous two games in the series, but Steam users will have a long wait on all fronts.

IO Interactive is reviewing the process by which players will be able to maintain their progress across all versions of Hitman 3. Console players will find the process more intuitive, as their digital storefronts will only detect purchases and grant access to those levels in the new game. On PC, the original Hitman saw the release on the Epic Games Store as a free promotion when the Hitman 3 the deal was announced, but Hitman 2 never received the same courtesy. This means that those who want to play all the levels in the Epic Store will have to buy the levels again in the form of Access Pass DLC.

IO Interactive indicates in the guide that the Access Pass will be heavily discounted in the first week of launch, as well as various other points during the exclusive period on the Epic Games Store. Regardless, many players are upset considering that the developer has promised that players will be able to transfer their progress for free from both games. The developer revealed this potential additional purchase five days prior to the game’s launch, ensuring that many players find out only after they have secured their purchase on launch day.

Due to the ever-changing nature of PC stores and the treatment Epic is giving developers, IO Interactive is in a tough spot regarding Hitman 3. There is no indication that this is simply a case of the team wanting more money from its player base. If anything, going with an exclusive deal from Epic shows that it is simply trying to make the numbers work as it goes as an independent studio. Still, it’s unfortunate that PC gamers have to go through financial hurdles that console gamers won’t have to go through to get the full experience.
