Just last week we heard reports that Samsung was planning to add S Pen stylus support to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and now there is more evidence of the move via a patent application that was just released.
As LetsGoDigital discovered, the Samsung Electronics patent shows a mobile device that folds in half and has a stylus holder. When not in use, the stylus inserts into the body of the phone, just like the Samsung Galaxy Note series.
The obvious candidate for this technology would be the Galaxy Z Fold 3, although we wouldn’t read too much into the actual design of the device shown here, as it’s probably just a generic placeholder for whatever Samsung’s next foldable looks like. .
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 came out in August, so we could wait a few months before a successor appears. Based on previous patents, it appears that the hinge might need a significant design overhaul.
The patent also mentions electromagnetic resonance (EMR) technology, as used in Note phones. There have been rumors that folding phones would use active electrostatic solution (AES) displays instead – it’s more expensive but better for its flexibility.
However, just because the patent doesn’t mention AES doesn’t mean it’s not genuine – this filing will have taken months to prepare, and from what we’ve heard so far, it appears that Samsung hasn’t made a decision yet. on the matter anyway.
The usual patent caveat applies: These documents do not show actual products, but ideas for products that companies are experimenting with. It may take Samsung years to get this technology right, or it may not happen at all.
Add in the speculation about the merger of the Fold and Note series though, and it seems that a stylus-equipped foldable is definitely something Samsung is interested in. If you don’t get the right combination in 2021, we could see it happen in 2022.
