Here’s how to win a free Xbox Series X, starting tomorrow

Well folks, it’s that legendary time of year where excited gamers around the world chow down on cheap cues for a chance to get their hands on the newest Xbox hardware. And on a very serious note, don’t forget to grab some of those beloved Mexican pizzas before they disappear from the menu on November 5.

Starting tomorrow, 24th September, you can buy a medium or large drink at Taco Bell (no $ 5 boxes this time, just drinks), receive a special code and enter it via text message to try your luck and win an Xbox Series X bundle. The bundle will include an Xbox Series X console, one of the new Xbox Wireless Controllers, and six months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

As a reminder, Ultimate includes the ability to stream games to Android devices using Microsoft’s xCloud. So if you win the Taco Bell contest, you’ll get top-notch Xbox hardware along with a service that offers a huge catalog of downloadable games, as well as select titles that can be played anywhere with a decent internet connection.

Play in style at home with the X Series, then use the freedom of remote streaming on the go. All for drinking some Pepsi at Taco Bell. Not a bad deal.

And, of course, you will have the privilege of trying Series X before anyone else. I’m not sure if Taco Bell will ship consoles as people win, ahead of Microsoft’s official launch on November 10, but that’s how it has worked with these awards in the past.

Along those lines, I’ve covered a lot of the Taco Bell Xbox on my Forbes page over the years, and I must say I’m a bit disappointed that they’re not doing anything limited or unique with these Series X systems. The Platinum (2018) and Eclipse (2019) consoles had custom paint jobs and made the classic Taco Bell “bong” noise when powered on. It doesn’t look like we’ll get anything similar in 2020.

However, you’re trading an interesting aesthetic for the chance to play the new X Series early, which I bet is a decent trade-off. It will be a lot like winning an original Xbox in 2001, which is what goes back to these cross-game promotions.

Good luck to all my Xbox brothers looking to move to the next generation a month ahead of schedule. And know that 20 years from now, YouTubers will microwave old Mexican pizzas that they have kept in their freezer for decades, while reminiscing about the launch of Xbox Series X in the midst of the exciting, terrifying and strange times of 2020.
