Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told a news conference that several people were killed in what the government has declared a “gruesome” terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday night.
The authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of deaths, but said that among the victims was one of the attackers, who was shot by police.
A manhunt of the “heavily armed and dangerous” attackers is currently underway.
“We have assembled various special forces units that are now looking for the suspected terrorists,” Nehammer said.
“Therefore, I am not limiting it to one area of Vienna because these are mobile perpetrators,” he added.
Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig said 15 people, including an officer, had been hospitalized, seven of whom suffered serious injuries.
Authorities urge people to stay home, confirming that the incident is “still active”.
