Google’s annual I / O conference was supposed to take place this week. Unfortunately, like many other meetings, it has been canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. We were expecting all the I / O announcements to arrive on Friday, but it seems that Google may postpone some of the most important ones. Vodafone documents indicate that the expected launch of the Pixel 4a was delayed from May to June.

Last year, the Pixel 3a launch coincided with Google I / O, and this year’s leaks made it look like the 4a would be the same. However, Google canceled not only the physical event but also the online I / O conference that it initially promised. Next on the agenda is the launch of Google’s Android 11 beta, which will take the form of a keynote online on June 3. We haven’t seen any evidence of a deluge of impending Google ads, so what about the Pixel 4a?

According to a leaked Vodafone document, the operator expects to start selling the Pixel 4a on June 5. That’s much later than the May 11 date that the operator had previously listed. Of course, we can only speculate on the reason for the delay. Google teams are still adapting to remote work, which is one of the reasons cited for the lack of an online I / O replacement. It could be that the final stages of development and testing for the 4th have taken longer than expected.

The Pixel 4 has not sold well and as a result Google has been aggressively dismissing it.

However, there is also an iPhone-shaped elephant in the room. Apple released the iPhone SE 2020 recently, and it starts at $ 400 just like the Pixel 4a (probably). Apple’s new phone has almost the same hardware from the more expensive family of the iPhone 11, thanks to its carefully controlled supply chain. Google’s midrange Pixel will predictably have midrange components, and that could mean it won’t compare favorably with the iPhone SE.

The delay could help Google make some last-minute adjustments to marketing or pricing, but it will at least give Google some distance from the iPhone ad. The Pixel 4a is an important phone for Google’s hardware division. The company’s flagship phones haven’t sold very well lately; We know that the Pixel 3a gave the company a much-needed boost last year after disappointing Pixel 3 sales. The Pixel 4a could do the same in 2020.
