Google announced that it has achieved one of its goals of using recycled materials in all of its Made By Google products.
The company had committed to achieving the goal by 2022, but announced that it achieved it early, The Verge reported.
According to Google’s sustainability systems architect David Bourne, all new Pixel and Nest products are now designed with recycled materials. That is not to say that their products are made entirely from recycled materials, but at least they include recycled materials somewhere in the product.
The back cover of the Pixel 5 is made from 100% recycled aluminum, and the new Nest Audio is made from 70% recycled plastic, with the sustainable fabric cover that it introduced with the Nest Mini last year. And on the newer Nest thermostat, the trim plate (the part that sticks to the wall) is made from post-consumer recycled plastic, Google reported.
“Google’s focus on incorporating recycled materials into our hardware design not only supports our sustainability commitments, but also enables our supply chain partners to confidently invest and develop recycled materials for the industry of consumer electronics in general can use them as well, “Bourne said in a statement.
The company said in September that it would run its carbon-neutral operations by 2030 and that it had purchased enough carbon offsets to cancel the company’s carbon dioxide emissions since its founding in 1998. And as of Monday, it will continue to maintain “all Google’s Made by Hardware shipments to and from direct customers 100% carbon neutral. “
It further said that it is working towards achieving zero waste landfill certification at all of its final assembly manufacturing sites by 2022, which means that most of the waste from those operations will be recycled, The Verge said.
