Google Stadia launches YouTube live streaming support

Google is finally delivering on one of its most promised features, which wasn’t ready when the service went live. Starting tomorrow, all users will be able to stream their games live on YouTube, correcting an omission that had put some users out of the service. In addition to streaming, YouTube integrations will make it easy to see what the creator is up to. Plans to offer web links to join a game in progress don’t seem to be going through with this update, sadly. According to 9 to 5 Google, you will just have to name your stream and confirm whether it is kid-friendly or not.

Streaming quality hasn’t been mentioned so far, and while Google said at the Stadia launch that 4K would be supported, we haven’t been able to confirm yet if that’s definitely the case. 4K is speculated to be reserved for Stadia Premium subscribers.

The launch of Google Stadia has been very “branded” for Google, as several features were not ready and will be added later. In addition to YouTube integration, Stadia also launched without support for Google Chromecast devices, aside from the high-end Chromecast Ultra bundled with the controller. Chromecast with Google TV will be added early next year, while Nvidia Shield users have had some success.

The lack of support for the YouTube launch has done nothing to prove Stadia’s credentials. With initial interest in the platform still eclipsed by the current generation of physical consoles, Google will have to work hard to demonstrate more that cloud gaming can do. Nowhere will this be more apparent than with the imminent launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which is seen as Stadia’s first big opportunity to show what it is capable of.

As for the YouTube integration, if your app is up to date, the option may have already been added, but it remains grayed out. That should resolve itself tomorrow when the service goes live.
