Windows 10 was no surprise, nor was the fact that support for Windows 7 was ending. Both home and business users were well informed of the impending doom of Windows 7 and given enough time to upgrade or buy new machines. Guess what happened? Smart people left Windows 7 before support ended, while stupid people didn’t.
Look, I hate name calling, but anyone who still has Windows 7 is actually stupid. Okay, I suppose they could instead be lazy or indifferent, but ultimately, it’s stupid behavior to run an unsupported OS, especially for a business. And that’s why it’s very disappointing to learn that Google is expanding Chrome support for Windows 7.
Yes, Google is rewarding stupid behavior by extending support for its Chrome web browser on Windows 7. It is not supported now. It will run from July 15, 2021 to January 15, 2022. Why? The search giant claims it is because many organizations have yet to transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Unfortunately, this just means that Google is enabling this bad security behavior.
“Migrating to Windows 10 was part of many organizations’ roadmap for the year. But as new priorities emerged for IT teams, we’ve heard that 21 percent of organizations are still in the process of migrating. to Windows 10. With this support extension, companies with their updates still in progress can be assured that users who remain on Windows 7 will continue to benefit from the security and productivity benefits of Chrome, “says Max Christoff, Director of Chrome Engineering.

Christoff further says, “IT teams can also take advantage of Chrome’s existing business capabilities and future roadmap, including our continued investment in cloud management, business security capabilities, and our plans to more closely integrate with the broader ecosystem. broad across all versions of the operating system. “
I know what you’re probably thinking: Didn’t COVID-19 delay some migration plans? Well yes, but Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020, before the pandemic really hit the world. In other words, the people responsible would have made the transition before the end of 2019. Anyone who still has Windows 7 today has no one to blame but themselves. The coronavirus is not a legitimate excuse.
Ultimately, Google is allowing this silly behavior, and it is very irresponsible. This extended Chrome support will only give these Windows 7 users another reason to further delay their migration plans.
