Google Photo’s robust set of editing features will soon start to shrink for free users.

XDA Developers reports that Google could soon be planning to block some of its editing options behind a paywall, that is, paid subscriptions to Google One.

A look at the code for the most recent update to Google Photos presents several strings indicating that this change could be coming.

  • As a member of Google One, you have access to additional editing features.

  • Get additional editing features with a Google One membership.

  • Unlock this feature and more with a Google One membership.

  • Unlock more editing features and storage {storage_amount} with a Google One membership.

XDA Developers’ Mishaal Rahman also took to Twitter to share some screenshots sent to them by a reader who appears to confirm these changes. Namely, the Color Pop feature, which is currently free, appears to have moved behind a Google One subscription requirement. However, The Verge reports that the Color Pop option is not being removed or blocked behind a paywall, and instead you are giving subscribers a new version.

“In Google Photos, pop color is a feature that is still available for anyone to use, free of charge, for photos with depth information (such as portrait mode). As part of an ongoing rollout that began earlier this year Google One members can apply the feature to more photos of people, including those without detailed information. “

Google declined to comment further on other editing tools that could be behind Google One subscriptions. The search giant has yet to make any official announcements about its plans in this regard.
