Google is implementing custom backgrounds for video calls made through Meet.
The search engine giant took to an official blog post to make the announcement. The feature allows users to change their backgrounds using custom images or with one already available on Google Meet. These range from abstract backgrounds to more professional options, like office spaces.
Google Meet desktop users can change their backgrounds now, but the feature will roll out soon for those on mobile devices. Google states on its blog that it could take up to a week before everyone at Google Meet has access to the new features.
Google Meet is one of the latest video conferencing platforms to introduce this feature, behind Zoom and Microsoft Teams. However, slowly, Google has been rolling out a variety of new features, given users’ reliance on video calling during the coronavirus pandemic. Most recently, Google introduced real-time captions, background blur, low-light mood, and a mosaic view that can support up to 49 people at a time.
According to The Verge, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that Meet supports around 235 million conferences a day, as well as 7.5 billion video calls every day. It seems that as long as people continue to use Meet, Google will continue to introduce new settings. For now, the ability to change personal history during a conference should come in handy for many.
